Workhouse to closeuntil end of monthfor minor makeover

THE Workhouse Museum on the Glendermott Road will be temporarily closed for general maintenance works until August 24.

The Museum will close for a two week period on Monday.

A spokesperson for Council’s Museum and Heritage Services, apologising for any inconvenience caused, explained that the works will include general painting of the interior of the building, the installation of new floor coverings etc, ahead of a new exhibition that is set to open in September.

The Workhouse opened in 1840, closed as a Workhouse in 1948 but continued to be used as a hospital until 1991. A group of local historians managed to save some of the original Workhouse building from demolition and this is where the museum and the Waterside branch library are now housed.
