Ulster Orchestra puts women back in the spotlight

In support of International Women’s Day 2013, the Ulster Orchestra presents Gallic Charms, a concert that puts women back in the spotlight; Principal Conductor JoAnn Falletta and world-renowned ‘cellist Natalie Clein team up for an evening of melodious French music.

With Mother’s Day just round the corner, the Ulster Orchestra’s Gallic Charms concert in the Ulster Hall makes the perfect gift for your mum this year. Quite unusually, the concert features both a female conductor and a female soloist in support of International Women’s Day 2013 on 8 March.

The programme hosts an evening of French, or French-inspired, music starting off with Fauré’s Suite: Pelléas et Mélisande, from his incidental music for Maeterlinck’s play.

Renowned and gifted cellist Natalie Clein will then perform Lalo’s Cello Concerto in D minor. A British born cellist, Natalie came to widespread attention at the age of sixteen when she won both the BBC Young Musician of the Year and the Eurovision Competition for Young Musicians. As a student she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Scholarship by the Royal College of Music before completing her studies with Heinrich Schiff in Vienna. She has since won the 2005 Classical BRIT for Young British Performer, the Ingrid Zu Solms prize at the Kronberg Academy and is a Professor of Cello at the Royal College of Music London.

Closing the concert is Strauss’ Suite: Le Bourgeois gentilhomme which, although written by an Austrian, is based on a play by Molière and its refined, elegant and graceful melodies perfectly capture the French Baroque style.

Treat your mother this Mother’s Day to a relaxing evening of gentle melodies and rapt emotion in a concert featuring one of the finest cellists of our generation.
