This is a humanitarian disaster of unprecedented scale. Funds are urgently required to provide clean water and sanitation systems to safeguard against the threat of disease, and deliver other life-saving supplies.

Heavy monsoon rains have caused floods of enormous scale. All five provinces of the country have been affected and the number of people in need of urgent assistance is bigger than the 2004 Tsunami, Haiti, and the last Pakistan earthquake combined.

UNICEF is trying desperately to reach the 7–8 million people most affected, of which 3.5 million are estimated to be children.

UNICEF is currently providing enough clean water for 1.5 million people every day, but millions more need the same.

The charity estimates that 30 million will be needed to cope with this emergency.
