UNICEF Coleraine Branch respond to Haiti disaster

THE Coleraine Branch of UNICEF is urgently appealing for emergency assistance to aid the victims of the Haiti earthquake

A spokesperson told the Times: “Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and has a population of 9.6 million inhabitants, of which more than half are under 21 years old.

“This catastrophe will only exacerbate the already critical situation for the people of Haiti, especially women and children.

By Friday last a UNICEF plane had landed in Port-au-Prince and supplies to help 10,000 people were being unloaded.

“In co-ordination with other UN agencies present on the ground, UNICEF will provide supplies that will allow access to adequate sanitation, safe water and basic health care for affected children and families.”

The Coleraine and District Branch of UNICEF has already sent 1,200 to assist with the relief effort, but much more will be needed.

Donations can be made to the Branch Treasurer, Mrs. Edith Ludlow , 7 Grange Road, Coleraine BT52 1NG or directly to the Haiti Earthquake Children’s Appeal, UNICEF UK, Freepost CL885, Billericay, CM12 0BR. On-line payments can be made at www.unicef.org.uk/haiti .
