Uninsured driver stopped for speeding

When police stopped a 30-year-old man for speeding they discovered he did not have a licence or insurance.

Robert James Gates, Silverwood Leaves, Lurgan, was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for two years, and banned for six months for driving without insurance on May 28 this year.

He was also fined £150, with a £15 offender’s levy and banned for six months for not having a licence.

A fine of £100 was imposed for an excess speed offence.

Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Wednesday the at 9.35am Gates was detected driving at 41mph in a 30mph zone at Sloan Street in Lurgan.

Police asked him for his licence and insurance and he told them he did not have any.

Mr Conor Downey, representing the defendant, said the car belonged to the defendant’s partner who was being charged with permitting no insurance.

He added that Gates presented no difficulties with police and was completely up front.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said it was concerning as the defendant had offences of driving while disqualified, no insurance and dangerous driving on his record.
