Union chiefs learn about integrated education

The leaders of three major UK teaching unions visited Hazelwood Integrated College on Tuesday, January 14 to learn about integrated education.

Among those who visited the Whitewell Road school were Stephen McCord, president of the 6,000-strong Ulster Teachers’ Union, Beth Davies, president of the National Union of Teachers - the largest teachers’ union in the UK - and Phil Jackson, president of The Educational Institute of Scotland - the largest teaching union in Scotland.

Also present was Rita Fox from the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation.

The guests were given a tour of the school and got the opportunity to meet with staff and students.

Principal Kathleen Gormley showcased films made at the college about integration, highlighting the effectiveness of integrated education in a segregated society.
