Unique City Centre window gallery opens

A NEW gallery opened last week in Lisburn City Centre. However, it’s not like any conventional gallery, in fact you can’t even get into it.

Instead several vacant shop windows in Castle Street and Market Square have been transformed into colourful photographic galleries with striking images of Lisburn.

Over the past months Lisburn City Centre Management has been working with students from the South Eastern Regional College (SERC) to gather a range of images to brighten frontages in the City Centre. The students from the Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production course in Lisburn took the photographs that have been incorporated into these new window graphics that at first glance appear to be a gallery.

Alderman Allan Ewart, Chairman of Lisburn City Centre Management said; “The positive difference it has made to the Frederick Thomas building on the corner of Castle Street has got many local people talking. While we would prefer to be at the opening of a new retail unit we do feel that it is important to create these type of installations that will prevent the City Centre looking untidy and help to encourage future investment.”

Michael Malone, Director of Curriculum and Information Services at the College, added; “The new window displays are fantastic, the colour and imagery used add such vibrancy to the City Centre.

“We are delighted to work with Lisburn City Centre Management on this initiative as not only does it improve the image of the City Centre but it also provides a platform for our students to showcase their work. Already some shop owners have approached our students about doing photography and multimedia work for them, this will provide them with further experience to support their classroom based learning.”

Liane Radcliffe, Assistant Head of School for Computing, Media and Software Engineering added; “I would like to thank Lisburn City Centre Management for providing our students with this opportunity, they have been amazing to work with and have been very supportive of local Lisburn students. This is a brilliant showcase for students’ work, usually their work would sit in a portfolio that would only been seen by an examiner but this provides an opportunity for the people of Lisburn to see the fantastic images that our students have produced.”
