Unique organ recital

A UNIQUE musical event will take place in St Columb’s Cathedral tomorrow, Thursday, July 19, at 1.10pm.

Entitled the ‘Young Organists’ Showcase’ the event is part of the on-going Summer Music Series of 2012. Four young organists will be performing music by a range of composers in what will be a most interesting programme. Admission to the concert is free with entirely voluntary contributions, if wished, at the end.

Those taking part are Nicky Morton and Louis Fields, who are joint holders of the Philip Mehaffey Memorial Organ Scholarship in the Cathedral, together with Ben McGonigle, a former holder of the Scholarship and who is Organist of Christ Church, Londonderry, and Eamonn McCrossan. Nicky, Louis and Ben are all members of the Cathedral Choir as well.

The four young organists will be playing works by J S Bach, C S Lang, Flor Peeters and Franz Liszt.

The Dean of Derry, Dr William Morton, said: “As one who plays the organ myself, I am delighted the Music Series in the Cathedral this summer is featuring these young musicians, aiding them in their musical development and promoting the pipe organ to such a high degree. I extend a very warm welcome and invitation to all who would like to come along.”
