University bursary for former pupil

Jordan McCullough has been selected as a Queen’s Scholar in Modern Languages.

This award provides him with a bursary from Queen’s University Belfast that will allow him free education at the university for the duration of his study.

Jordan is now studying Spanish and French at Queen’s, a course that would, according to Carrickfergus Grammar School, cost approximately £16,000 over the four-year duration.

The Queen’s Scholars scheme is designed to reward academic achievement and recognise wider social and community contributions including sports, music and the arts, business and enterprise and the community.

Prior to the winners being announced, a shortlist of 68 pupils attended a selection day at the university where they were assessed by a number of business leaders.

Isabel Jennings, director of Student Plus at QUB, said: “Each of the Queen’s Scholars has demonstrated exceptional leadership and enterprise skills and an outstanding commitment to social responsibility which, alongside their academic strengths, mark them out as the best and brightest young people Northern Ireland has to offer.”

Carrickfergus Grammar School has featured previously in the scholarship awards with Aaron Hutton, currently studying an MSc in Pharmacy, having been successful last year. Furthermore, Adam Fittis was a close runner-up to being selected as another Queen’s Scholar for Mathematics this year.
