In a statement, a spokesperson from TransportNI indicated the Department of Regional Development did not intend to provide any additional ‘formal’ traffic calming measures on the route.

“However, TransportNI in conjunction with the PSNI, recently carried out a review of speed limits along the B90 from the A8 to the B149 Beltoy Road,” the spokesperson added.

“This review indicated that a revision of the current speed limits along the B90 at Greenisland would better reflect the function of the road and help improve driver respect and in turn compliance with the speed limits.

A consultation process regarding the provision of a 40mph limit to the west of Greenisland will take place in the coming weeks.

The area proposed will cover the Monkstown Road junction, extending to the existing 40mph limit to the east of the village and including the development around the Trooperslane Road junction.

Welcoming the announcement was East Antrim MLA, Stewart Dickson.

“Over the past few years, and particularly since the commencement of roadworks on the Shore Road, the Upper Road has seen more and more traffic,” the Alliance representative said.

“People in the area have expressed to me their concern of this traffic increase, but also the high speed limits on sections of the road, and indeed drivers exceeding the limits. This is especially worrying when constituents’ driveways back directly onto the road.

“I’m optimistic that the implementation of lower speed limits will help allay these concerns, and make the road safer for residents and road users alike.”

Meanwhile, the £50million A2 upgrade scheme is on track for completion this summer.

The investment involves upgrading a 3.5 kilometre stretch of the carriageway between Jordanstown Road and Seapark to dual carriageway standard.

Improvements will also include four new roundabouts at Shore Avenue, Shorelands, Station Road Greenisland and Seapark junction.
