Urgent meeting sought on Chapel Hill congestion

LISBURN councillors are calling for an urgent meeting with Roads Service to discuss the ongoing problem of traffic congestion on Chapel Hill.

The issue of cars which have disabled stickers parking at the bottom of the road, which hamper the flow of traffic in the area, has been raised on numerous occasions over the years. However, a solution has yet to be found.

At this week’s meeting of the Council’s Planning Committee Councillor Ronnie Crawford said something must be done as a matter or urgency to resolve the matter.

“This has been going on for years,” said Mr Crawford. “We have tried to get waiting times introduced but we keep getting told we have to wait for legislation.”

Mr Crawford suggested the police could be asked to place cones on the road at certain peak times.

“I am constantly told about the traffic problems in the area,” he continued. “Traffic jams are driving people away from the city centre.”

Chairman of the Planning Committee, Alderman James Tinsley, proposed that a meeting should be held with Roads Service, police and representatives of the Blue Badge organisation which oversees the disabled parking scheme, to seek a solution. “We should request that meeting as soon as possible,” he added.

Alderman Allan Ewart supported the proposal to convene a meeting. “This has been an ongoing issue for four or five years,” he said. “Every time Roads Service come to a meeting we are told they are looking into it.”

The committee agreed to request a meeting with Roads Service as soon as possible.
