UUP calls for re-think on councillors’ studies fee

THE UUP in Foyle has made clear its objection to the proposal recently reported in the local press that councillors on Derry City Councils are to receive funding from Council to pursue studies at University of Ulster, Magee Campus for a Diploma in Community Studies.

Speaking on behalf of the Foyle Constituency Association, UUP local party Chairman Terry Wright says: “Whilst we recognize the benefits which might accrue for participants on any course of study we regard the idea that councillors might be supported through the public purse as insensitive and inappropriate.

Councillors are already paid for their services and those who are members, for example of the Port and Harbour Commissioners, receive additional payment so it is not unreasonable we believe, for councillors to fund their participation in a course of study if they feel it will add value to and enhance their ability to perform within Council.

“At a time when many of their constituents have to support their children through ever more costly university courses and students at 16-19 are facing the end of EMAs it seems insensitive and inappropriate, indeed, simply wrong, for public representatives and servants of the people to treat themselves so generously.

“If every councilor takes advantage of this offer, the cost will be considerable and once a precedent has been set, where will it end? Council needs to think again.”
