UUP speak out on A5 funding

Following the announcement by the Irish Government of the cancellation of funding for the A5 the UUP in Foyle calls for creative decision-making by the Stormont Executive which will ensure that the money allocated within Northern Ireland is used to fund projects which will boost the economy, improve the infrastructure of the country and provide employment.

A spokesman said: “Whilst it is unlikely that all of the money will come to the North-West it is our belief that the bulk of the money should be allocated to the region.

“In regard to Londonderry, there is now a chance to fund the long-delayed implementation of plans for new builds for Ebrington Primary School and Foyle College and we will be urging our Party Leader, who is a supporter of the project to press the case now that funding is becoming available.

“The UUP in Foyle has already been in touch with UUP Minister for Regional Development Danny Kennedy to press the case for an early upgrade of the road between Belfast and Londonderry.

“If this were to take place it will represent a significant improvement in the link between the two main centres of population and at the same time enable travelers to reach the motorway which runs from Belfast to Dublin more quickly thus addressing to some extent the deficit which will result from the cancellation of the A5 plans.”
