UUP trio help to plant Jubilee copse

GLYNN’s Jubilee Park was the fitting location to plant trees marking the 60th anniversary of Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne.

Ulster Unionist representatives Roy Beggs Snr and Jnr joined Cllr Mark McKinty and others to plant a variety of trees that will form a woodland copse of species native to Northern Ireland, complementing surrounding woodland and wildlife habitats.

The event at Glynn – organised by Larne Borough Council in partnership with The Woodland Trust – is part of a UK-wide venture aimed at increasing woodlands by planting six million trees during the diamond jubilee year.

Assemblyman Roy Beggs Jnr said the location was entirely appropriate, explaining: “The Jubilee Park was opened in June, 1977 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s silver jubilee and the playground had been upgraded in recent years following an active local community campaign. It is very appropriate to further enhance the park in 2012 as part of the diamond jubilee celebrations.”

Cllr Mark McKinty added: “Jubilee Park has a lot of history and is a great location. The riverside park is a wonderful local asset and by planting additional trees, we will not only be enriching the environment but also creating an important community space for future generations.

“I look forward to visiting this site and watching the trees grow.”
