Vandals target Sixmile Leisure Centre

The incident took place some time on Saturday evening (October 31).

Staff from the centre discovered the damage caused to a large window which overlooks the small swimming pool.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg, joined with staff at the Ballynure Road centre to assess the damage.

Councillor Hogg condemned the incidents which have plagued the complex in recent months.

“Since September a total of seven windows have been broken at Sixmile Leisure Centre. This is an absolute disgrace and a total waste of ratepayers’ money. Last year £3,000 was spent on repairing damage caused by vandalism. These windows will cost in excess of £2,400 to replace.

“This mindless anti-social behaviour must come to an end. I would ask anyone who has any information to contact the local PSNI,” he said.

This incident follows on from a spate of vandalism incidents in the town in recent weeks, which saw business premises and cars being attacked.

Windows were smashed at the Joli designer clothing store on Granges Street and the Boots chemist branch at The Square.

Police officers visited the centre and viewed CCTV footage. Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call investigating officers on 028 9065 0222.
