“The damage sustained to fences, signs, litter bins, seats and picnic tables has been mostly repaired but will cost the Forest Service a considerable amount,” he said.

“Those who carried out this activity should be wholly condemned and I would urge anyone who witnessed anything to contact the PSNI.

“Forest Service inform me that they have been working in conjunction with the Police to increase the presence around the forest since this vandalism at the end of last month and they are appealing to local residents to also offer assistance through ‘Forest Watch’ to prevent any further incidents of this kind taking place.”

Downshire Councillor Paul Stewart added: “This reckless vandalism is very unfortunate and I call upon anyone with information to contact the local police.

“Coming into the summer months, Hillsborough Forest is used by many members of the public for leisurely walks and outings but it is disconcerting that some in society feel the need to be destructive towards vital forest property. “I have recently contacted the local Neighbourhood Police Team regarding this damage and assured him of my support in increasing patrols around the forest area,” he concluded.
