‘Vibrant contrast to existing poor quality public spaces’

A £2.5million revamp of Carrick town centre received double ministerial endorsement this week.

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland and his Department of Regional Development counterpart Danny Kennedy visited on Monday to see plans for the public realm scheme.

Designed in a partnership between the departments and Carrickfergus Council, the project’s appointed contractors FP McCann Ltd are due to begin work later this month.

Mr McCausland said: “The work about to commence in Carrickfergus town centre will provide a vibrant and uplifting contrast to the existing poor quality and deteriorating surfaces of the paths and public spaces, which were clearly evident during my visit.

“The aim of this new scheme is to create a distinctive ‘people friendly’ environment using high quality stone surfaces, improved street lighting and co-ordinated street furniture, attracting more visitors and shoppers to come to the town.

“I welcome the appointment of contractors for the scheme and look forward to coming back to Carrickfergus and seeing the work completed later this year.”

Funding is being met by DSD, DRD Roads Service and Carrick Council. The DSD contribution is up to the value of £1,922,987 and DRD has provided £300,000.

Minister Kennedy added: “This partnership scheme will provide an improved pedestrian environment with enhanced links between the town centre and the castle.”

After viewing the public realm display at the Civic Centre, the ministers toured High Street and Market Place accompanied by representatives of council and the contractors.

The Mayor, Alderman Jim McClurg, who welcomed the visitors, spoke of the economic potential of the initiative.

”I am delighted that JP McCann has been appointed contractor and that work is finally starting to improve the streetscape of Carrickfergus. The scheme will bring a significant uplift to the traditional town centre allowing greater access for pedestrians and a much more aesthetically-pleasing environment for businesses, visitors and shoppers.

“I also look forward to watching the scheme unfold and to seeing the fruition of everyone’s efforts later in the year when we will have a dramatically improved traditional town centre to be proud of once more.”
