Victim was sat on and punched in face several times

A Portadown man who sat on top of another man and punched him several times on the face was ordered to pay his victim £200 compensation last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

Terence Grimley (55), of Obins Drive, was also put on probation for 12 months with the conditions he attends alcohol counselling and participates in the Resolve programme.

At a previous court he had pleaded guilty to a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm and sentencing had been adjourned so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.

The court heard that on June 24 this year police went to an address in Portadown after a report of an assault.

The injured party alleged that the defendant had struck him on the face, causing him to fall to the ground.

Grimley then sat on top of him and punched him several times on the face. The victim also struck his head on the concrete.

The injured party suffered a swollen left cheek, his left eye was bruised and there was a half inch cut on his left cheek under his eye.

A barrister representing Grimley said he suffered from anxiety and panic attacks and was on medication.

He added that his client was seeking help with alcohol and anger management issues.

The barrister said that all the people involved on this occasion had been drinking and were in no state to give evidence.

He added that Grimley was very sorry and had expressed remorse in the probation report.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said that the defendant had a problem with anger management and violence occurred although there had been gaps in his record.

He added that this was a fairly sustained attack but pointed out that the defendant never had a probation order before and that Grimley seemed to be making some efforts to deal with his problems.
