Victoria enjoys Olympicexperience

LISBURN girl Victoria Bell has just returned from the Olympics where she volunteered for two weeks, witnessing events such as gymnastics, basketball and trampolining.

Victoria, 22, who has recently graduated from Queen’s and will begin a PGCE in Liverpool, said it was “exciting” to be part of the Games.

She worked in the North Greenwich Arena, the O2 arena renamed for the Olympics, where the artistic gymnastics, trampolining and the basketball finals took place.

Victoria commented: “It was very exciting to be a part of what was going on, and everyday was different, some days were more exciting than others, but nearly everyday I was able to see some of the action on the field of play.

“I was part of the Event Services Team and we had many different roles, including ticket scanning and welcoming the spectators, directing people and providing information, managing queues and directing people through security, seating people - which meant we got to watch what was happening - and controlling access to many different parts of the building, including media areas, VIP lounges and athlete areas.”

Victoria added: “I worked with a great team of people from all over the UK, and despite some early mornings and late nights I really enjoyed my time at the games. Our meals were provided when we were working and we had free transport to and from our shifts, but we had to find our own accomadation in London.

“It was very exciting to be in London during the Games and see some of the thousands of volunteers in their uniforms on the tubes and buses. I was grateful to receive a bursary from Volunteer Now to cover my costs, which my Grandmother had spotted the ad for in the Star.”
