Boxing legend Barry McGuigan thrilled primary schools pupils from across Cookstown, during a visit on Thursday morning.

The former boxing champion was in town to deliver a health programme to pupils from Phoenix Integrated PS, Cookstown PS and Holy Trinity PS.

With childhood obesity at an all-time high it has been the Barry McGuigan Boxing Academy’s priority to educate our younger generation on healthy eating and activity using fun and interactive equipment and games designed for 6 to 10 year olds.

In the last five years the NHS have recorded that 33% of 11 year olds are overweight or obese and among 4 and 5 year olds the figure is 22%.

Barry McGuigan said: “The Happy Hearts Primary School Health program has been specifically designed to integrate all aspects of healthy living into a fun, interactive and educational program.

“Educating primary aged school children on the practical guidelines needed to lead a healthier lifestyle is our main objective and we aim to inspire, enlighten and unite everyone in working towards a more active, healthy and happier lifestyle.”
