Video: Burnt out shell of Tyrone’s former 8th Battalion UDR barracks captured

It took nine fire crews over three hours to put out the “deliberate” blaze at the Grade B1 listed building, known as Killymeal House, in Dungannon.

A concert goer captured the inferno from Hill of the O’NeillTeams were called in from as far away as Lisburn, while firefighters were also deployed from Cookstown, Pomeroy, Portadown, Armagh and Dungannon.

A NIFRS spokesperson said: “Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service received a call at 6.25pm to a report of a fire at derelict premises at the Killymeal Road, Dungannon area on Friday 24th July.

“Two Fire Appliances from Pomeroy Fire Station, two Fire Appliances from Lisburn Fire Station as well as one Fire Appliance from Dungannon, Cookstown, Pomeroy, Portadown and Armagh Fire Stations were deployed to the scene.

“Firefighters dealt with a fire at a derelict four storey building in the area. The spread of fire was prevented to an adjacent building nearby.

“The incident finished at 10:06pm and is being treated as a deliberate fire.”

The Fire Service has handed the case over to the PSNI for investigation.

Killymeal House and its surrounding 13.5 acres site fell into a state of disrepair when forces left.

But some years later the property were put on the market with an asking price just short of £1m.

Development works, thought to be of a residential nature, had recently begun at the site.
