One of the country’s most controversial and high profile politicians, Mr Farage met with Carrick Castle candidate Noel Jordan.

The former Conservative Party member had earlier attended the Balmoral Show and a press conference in Belfast.

“This is my first visit to Carrickfergus and it’s certainly a lovely day for it,” said Mr Farage, who met local residents at the Carrick Castle RAOB Club. “I’ve found that there are more and more people showing an interest in UKIP here, and the fact that UKIP takes Northern Ireland seriously is a good thing.”

Describing the party as ‘non-sectarian’, Mr Farage went on to address the relevance of UKIP for Northern Irish voters. “I’m a Unionist, but I would say that the European position is more important than Northern Ireland’s position within the United Kingdom,” he said.
