VIDEO: Fergie DJ helps inspire new talent at Larne Music Yard

Former Factory lad Robert Ferguson, who is now resident DJ in the world-famous Hakkasan night club in Las Vegas, caught up with some old friends ahead of his highly-anticipated show at the Olderfleet Bar on Friday, June 26.

And he also took time out of his busy schedule to meet the new generation of up-and-coming musical talent in the town.

Fergie was invited to officially open the Music Yard, a facility catering for children and adults alike who wish to hone their musical skills.

The world-famous artist looked on as some of the younger musicians showcased their skills on guitar, drums and vocals.

He then imparted some words of wisdom on the youngsters in a Q&A session.

Speaking to the Times at the opening event, Fergie said: “When I first started out DJing, it took me months and months to learn how to be able to just match two records together.

“Listening to the young people performing here today, it is easy to see the positive impact this place has had in the short space of time it has been open.”

The Music Yard, which first threw open its doors at Point Street earlier this year, now provides tutoring for over 100 students.

The facility is the brainchild of Larne musician Thomas Hamilton, who has over 20 years experience in the music industry.

Fergie was full of praise for Thomas and said he was “the right man” to help bring out the best in the students.

He added: “Thomas has played in bands for many years so he has a lot of relevant experience.

“His energy and commitment is 100 per cent genuine and that is easy to see.”

Explaining his reasons for setting up the facility, Thomas said: “I created the Music Yard because I felt Larne was really lacking something of this nature.

“If there was anything like this when I was young, I would have been in my element.”

“This kind of environment really boosts young people’s confidence and helpes them come out of their shells .”

Some of the Music Yard students will be putting on a live display at Broadway bandstand as part of Larne Music Month, which is being organised by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.
