Video: Flowers mark scene of second road tragedy in Cookstown

The tragedy in the early of Sunday morning, the second in just over 24 hours, has sent shockwaves throughout the Mid Ulster community.

Her car is believed to have struck a tree along the Moneymore Road.

On Saturday 23-year-old Jayne Burnside from Cookstown died after she was struck by a vehicle on Gortagammon Road, Tullyhogue on Saturday morning.

Mid Ulster MLA Sandra Overend expressed the sense of shock, which has enveloped the local community:

“I cannot begin to imagine the pain that is being felt by the families left behind by these two tragedies that took place on our local roads near Cookstown over the weekend; my thoughts and prayers are with them and the friends of the bereaved,” she said.

“The PSNI continue to carry out their investigations, and while there seems to be no obvious reason or pattern identified in these accidents, I would appeal for anyone that has any information to forward it to the police as soon as possible.

“The roads can be dangerous for all road users... let us all take extra care on the roads, no matter what mode of transport we use.”

Dozens of local people have left messages of sympathy on social media, while many others have expressed their shock.
