Despite the overcast weather, optimistic local people stared to the heavens hoping to witness the partial eclipse, which began at around 8.30am and saw up to 95 per cent of the sun blocked out by the moon.

Larne man Paul Evans, a member of the Irish Federation of Astronomical Societies, brought a range of specialised equipment from telescopes to protective glasses, to give the small crowd of onlookers the best possible chance of catching a glimpse of the rare event.

It was noticeably darker and the temperature dipped considerably during the eclipse, which was viewed by thousands of people taking a few minutes out of their day to view something that will not be seen from these shores again until 2026.
