Video: Linen Green traders determined to ‘save Christmas’ after devastating flood

All 31 units were swamped with two feet of water on Sunday when a blocked culvert flooded the upmarket designer village.

But Storm Desmond will not stop them, they said.

Claire Murray at five star restaurant ‘Deli on the Green’ said they lost £150,000 worth of gourmet imported stock, which had just arrived for festive shoppers.

However, like the other traders, she said is determined to be back in business so as not to disappoint Christmas regulars.

Likewise, Gareth Bell of Panache shoes and Peter Stevenson from Paper Works stationary company are unwavering in their hopes not to lose any Christmas trade.

Dungannon-based MLA Lord Morrow has vowed to ensure the businesses impacted by flooding in the Linen Green are given every possible support.

After visiting the scene, he said: “I was shocked when I heard the news and even more shocked when I witnessed the destruction first hand. Traders are heartbroken to see stock ruined as they prepare for their busiest time of year.

“I have submitted an urgent oral question to the Assembly on the devastation which has occurred.”

Management at the Linen Green have commended the terrific team effort that helped 10 stores open for business today - with several more expected to be open for business on Tuesday.

“The Linen Green is grateful to all the complex’s customers for their patience and support,” said a statement, while Manager, Fionnuala McEldowney, has thanked all involved in the clean-up operation.

“The facilities team and traders at the Linen Green were overwhelmed by the support from the local community, council representatives and Linen Green customers when news began to spread about the flood damage to the shopping village,” she said. “Donaghmore Football Team even interrupted their training session to come down and help out with clearance at the Design Yard. “Our operations team are working day and night to assist all traders to open as soon as possible and reinstate our Christmas Santa experience.”

Councillor Linda Dillon, Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, added: “The Council is continuing to provide support to ensure that businesses in the Linen Green are up and running again as quickly as possible.

“That has to be the priority at this point and it’s good to hear that some have already been able to open their doors to customers.

“We always promote our towns as great shopping destinations, especially at Christmas, and this year it is more important than ever for us all to shop local and support our local traders.”
