Mark McElwee who run’s Maxi’s Grill said he was both surprised and delighted with the recognition for his chip shop, which is relatively new to the Mid Ulster area.

“We are all delighted here to have won the title, it’s something to be proud of and it will also give us a bit of a boost,” he said.

“When we spotted this competition, we thought we would enter, but we knew that we were up against a lot of really good chippies, not only here in Magherafelt, but in Cookstown and all the other towns.

“So it is a great honour to win the top spot.”

He added: “I would like to thank our hard-working staff, who have really helped build up our reputation.
