Video: Ministers announce almost £1m funding for Seamus Heaney Centre in Bellaghy

The Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness and Culture Minister Carál Níl Chuilín have announced funding of almost £1m towards the construction of the Seamus Heaney Arts and Literary Centre in Bellaghy.

The Ministers made the announcement during a visit to the construction site in the south Derry village this morning.

“The new Seamus Heaney Centre is a fitting way to celebrate the contribution of a literary giant. Through this cente the work, writings and life of Seamus Heanry will continue to enrich all our lives and move us deeply,” said Mr McGuinness.

Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Linda Dillon welcomed the funding.

“This project has huge local, national and international significance and will be a focal point for arts, cultural and educational activity, right at the heart of the place which so defined and inspired Seamus Heaney,” she said.

“The substantial funding announcement is testament to the facility’s value culturally and economically and is a very welcome investment.”

The overall cost of the Heaney Centre £4.2m and it is expected to finished next year.
