Video: Solar eclipse turns on street lights in Cookstown

Despite the warning of heavy cloud many people in Cookstown were given a glimpse of the solar eclipse on Friday morning.

The darkening skies even prompted the street lights to turn on.

The moon crossing in front of the sun for the first time in 16 years proved an unforgettable experience for those fortunate enough to have clear skies around 9.30am.

Dozens of people in Cookstown went out on to the streets and were rewarded with a 15-minute break in the clouds.

As the eclipse developed, the moon gradually took a larger and larger “bite” out of the sun, covering up to 97% of its face at the height of the eclipse.
