Video: Support urged for Cookstown school expansion plans

Plans were unveiled in local newspapers just last month, and with the deadline fast approaching, Principal Mrs Isabel Russell wants the public to back the consultation, because ‘the people of Cookstown deserve the best.’

Speaking to the MAIL about the proposal, Mrs Russell said: “This is very welcome news for us, not only is it recognition of the very good committed work which occurs in Holy Trinity on a daily basis, but it also demonstrates the belief that Holy Trinity College is sustainable, it is viable and it recognises that pupil interests should supersede the interests of institutions.”

Mrs Russell continued, saying “why should the families in Cookstown continue to be second best?”

“Cookstown is one of Ireland’s most dynamic and vibrant towns whose catchment population is projected to increase by a staggering 30% by 2021. The increasing Primary population augurs well for a growing post primary population up to 2021 at present. With a curriculum tailored to meet labour market needs, we will be in an excellent position as a large post primary school to give something back to our community, to encourage our young people to see Cookstown as a place to live, work and enjoy and for them to play their part in rejuvenating and revitalising the town,” Mrs Russell added.

The proposal also stated that the increase in admission numbers should be phased over a three-year period commencing from September 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Mrs Russell also expressed her delight that the Minister for Education announced in January 2013 that the school was included in the Schools’ Capital Programme to receive a new build and is hoping these plans will come together to strengthen Holy Trinity College further.

“We have an opportunity to explore every possible avenue for Holy Trinity College community,we have an obligation to ensure that our children are educated in modern facilities,” Mrs Russell added.
