Views sought on future of historic church

AN historic Londonderry church building could soon be filled with worshippers again after plans to turn it into a boutique hotel were shelved because of the recession.

The former Presbyterian church building on Great James’ Street, which was also used as public library, is currently empty and undergoing refurbishment.

The impressive building was built in 1837 and, as well as being used as a church and a library, it was most recently home to a creative arts firm.

One of the owners of the building, John O’Connor, said he is disappointed that plans to transform it into a hotel have had to be put on hold and said he is hoping to find another use for the former church.

“We had planned for an 18 bedroom boutique hotel, high-end restaurant and ladies beauty salon, but unfortunately those have had to be shelved due to the recession.

“I want to let the people of Derry and the North West know that and throw open the floor to any suggestions about what this building can be used for in the future. Derry has a lot of creative and innovative people and perhaps someone will come up with a good suggestion,” he said.

Mr O’Connor said he would like to see the building used for its original purpose. “It was built as a church and was home to a Presbyterian congregation for many years. Inside it retains many of the original features We have many religions here in the North and a lot of different denominations and I would like to see a new church of some kind of interdenominational group coming in here, something that could bring people together. Perhaps it could be used as some kind of a gospel hall or something like that,” he said.

The Derry businessman also said many people have been curious about the building. “We have been refurbishing this building and lots of people walking past have come in and had a look around. We powerwashed the front of it and painted the railings and people started noticing the building again. I’m sure many people walk or drive past it every day and are curious about what is being done with it so we want to give the people a chance to have a say in its future,” he said.
