Vigil of Light will follow the offical opening of the Peace Bridge

AN overnight Vigil of Light - involving people of all faiths from across the city - will follow the official launch of Londonderry’s iconic new Peace Bridge in just over three weeks time culminating in a special church service with the leaders of the four main churches.

The official opening of the new Peace Bridge will take place on the afternoon of Saturday June 25, 2011.

At the end of this opening day ILEX, in partnership with the Churches Trust wish to gather together people from all faiths across the city to lead a special overnight vigil of light on the Peace Bridge.

The Trust wants people to encounter an opportunity to make a wish for themselves, for the city, for the future. Those taking part in the Vigil of Light will be able to release their wish by Chinese lantern or as a Message in a Bottle.

Convening for two-hour shifts from 11.30pm on the night of Saturday, June 25, the groups will act as a welcoming committee and conduct a vigil of light overnight, culminating in a gathering with the leaders of the four main Churches in the city and other faith groups for a short service of dedication at 9am on Sunday morning.

In total, a team of over 70 volunteers are required and ideally, the Trust would like people to register in pairs.

If you would like a unique opportunity to meet people from across the community and be part of a special night of reflection then please register your interest in volunteering by contacting Diane or Kathryn at the Churches Trust on 02871 311 322 or by emailing: [email protected]. The deadline for registration is Wednesday, June 15, 2011.
