'Village' plan for Drumahoe

A NEW £60million pound housing build will kick off this summer in Drumahoe generating approximately 200 jobs and culminating in hundreds of homes by completion.

Copperthorpe - a "groundbreaking" and "unique" new development proposed for Drumahoe village will comprise a mix of detached, semi-detached and town houses with a "beautiful communal village park to enjoy those summer evenings and winter walks" says the developer Brookview. A range of shops and facilities will also be provided.

This is the second major development unveiled in Drumahoe within the past few weeks. Recently, the Sentinel revealed plans for a 50m development on the former Desmond's factory site, which included an ice rink, cinema, bowling alley, soccer dome, restaurants, retail units and a health care facility.

The latest huge scheme will result in hundreds of new houses and has an associated 10-year-development programme. Work starts this summer on the scheme which will be accessible from both the Fincairn and Glenshane Roads when it is finished.

Brookview says the new village will take full advantage of the new A29 Link Road providing links to Belfast and Eastern Area and that it will create employment, with around 200 jobs - in construction and in new and existing businesses.

There is also the availability of direct transportation within the city of Londonderry via a new dedicated bus route by Translink for this development.

The developer says the new scheme will be unique in that it takes a community approach to housing. Rather than build an isolated housing development bereft of social amenities and vital local facilities Copperthorpe will create a village ethos.

"The architecture and design has been arranged to create a new village style ambience situated on the edge of the city," the developer states.

"Brookview and Derry City Council have achieved a ground breaking agreement by creating a new community orientated environment where the inclusion of open facilities are as important as the superb detail of these contemporary homes.

"A range of shops and facilities will be provided at the village green to ensure the whole family's needs are met locally prices starting from 115,000," it adds.

This doorstep infrastructure providing daily amenities for family living will also be integral to the build
