Village traffic calming proposals for consultation

The announcement by Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has been welcomed by party colleague Jo-Anne Dobson and DUP Mayor of Craigavon Cllr Mark Baxter.

Mr Kennedy said: “There is already considerable community support for traffic calming measures in Donaghcloney.

“A design is presently being finalised that will allow consultation on a traffic calming scheme to be undertaken late this year or very early in next year.”

The proposed scheme is likely to include a significant number of ramps or speed cushions. Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson said: “I have been lobbied considerably by local people who are concerned about the danger of the volume and speed of traffic passing through the village.

“I would encourage everyone concerned to take part in the consultation and give their views towards traffic calming measures for the village as community support is key to the proposal going ahead.”

Cllr Baxter welcomed the consultation saying he had questioned Road Service representatives at length on the matter.

“Following representations from local residents the DUP has lobbied strongly for these measures even taking to the doors with a petition.

“We had pointed out that this particular area has been the scene of several traffic collisions and effective measures should be put in place that would slow down traffic which is essential if death and serious injury were to be avoided,” said Cllr Baxter.
