Villagers plant Royal Oak tree

MORE than 20 people braved the frosty weather on Saturday morning to help with a tree planting project in Ballynure.

A sapling of a Royal Oak from one of Queen Elizabeth’s estates was planted in the village to mark the start of National Tree Week.

As a final part of this year’s Jubilee celebrations, Ballynure and District Friendship Club and the Community Association were given free ‘berried’ trees to plant in the village.

The oak was planted by Community Association members Dr Peter Watson (outgoing Chairman) and Bob Sherrard beside the village tractor on the A8, while local residents gave a helping hand to plant the rest of the trees.

Despite the winter weather and hard ground, more than 100 saplings were planted at a number of locations around the village.
