VIP visits to Bluestone Unit

THE award winning Bluestone Mental Health Unit at Craigavon Area Hospital recently hosted visits for healthcare staff from Britain and also as far afield as Malaysia.

Two doctors from the Planning Division of the Malaysian Ministry of Health visited the unit to see first hand the design of this state of the art facility.

The visitors, Dr Hadithah Husin, Deputy Director (Dentist) and Dr Rohaizan Abdul Kadir Jailani, Principal Assistant Director (Medical Doctor), were given a tour of the facility and had the opportunity to discuss the flexibility of the design and how it creates a non-threatening environment for patients and contributes to the overall healing process.

Francis Rice, Director of Mental Health and Disability for the Southern Health and Social Care Trust said: “We are delighted to have visitors from the Malaysian Ministry of Health and to have the opportunity to share with them our concepts in the provision of modern Mental Health Services.”

A delegation of people from the NHS across Great Britain also visited the Unit after it was Highly Commended at the Design and Health International Academy Awards 2009.The Southern Trust’s Medical Director Dr Patrick Loughran said; “We were delighted to share with our visitors our developments at the Bluestone Unit and how patient experiences have been enhanced and therapeutic interventions supported”.
