VJ Day picnic in Hillsborough

Saturday August 15 marks the 70th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day, the day the Second World War officially ended in 1945.

To commemorate this momentous occasion, the Women’s Section of the Royal British Legion in Hillsborough is organising a community poppy picnic in the village next weekend.

“Saturday August 15 marks the 70th anniversary of Victory in Japan day, it also marks the day the Second World War ended and as a way of celebrating this myself and a few of the ladies in our branch have decided to hold a poppy picnic to raise funds for the The Royal British Legion,” explained Joanne Walker.

The event will begin at the village war memorial on Saturday August 15 at 11.45am, where there will be a short Act of Remembrance.

Following the service of remembrance, a ‘poppy picnic’ will be held on the green at the front of Hillsborough Parish Church, which was kindly granted to the Royal British Legion by the church’s Select Vestry.

The picnic will be held from 12noon until 3pm and everyone will be made very welcome.

Entrance fee for the picnic is £3 for adults and children under 16 are free and all funds raised will go towards the work of the Royal British Legion.

Picnic goers can bring their own food but shouldn’t worry as their will be sandwiches and tray bakes available.

Arrangements have also been made should the weather be unkind to move the event indoors so nothing will spoil the festivities.

The Hillsborough Old Guard exhibition will also be open in the Sexton’s house and the Women’s Section of the Royal British Legion would encourage everyone to call in and have a look at their excellent tribute to the Hillsborough men who left for the battlefields of World War One.
