Volcanic ash puts paid to Evelyn's plans to attend nephew's wedding

FOR former North Antrim lady, Evelyn McKendry, the prospect of coming back to her homeland from faraway Australia was thrilling.

Not only would she meet all her family and friends, but she would also have the pleasure of attending her nephew’s wedding.

Sadly for Evelyn, mother nature put a large spoke in her plans with the ash from the Icelandic volcano delaying flights from her home in New South Wales.

The result was that Evelyn missed the wedding by a day, but she’s at least grateful to be home safe and sound and spending the next five weeks with her loved ones.

Evelyn, formerly Wright, is part of a large family from the Lavin area, near Cloughmills, who moved to Australia in 1967.

The Times met up with Evelyn at a function in the new Lavin Orange Hall last Wednesday night when she accompanied her brother, George, and other family members at a function for two stalwarts of the Lodge - Andrew and the late David Hanna who were each presented with 60-year bars as well as paintings of Carrickfergus.

On the one hand Evelyn was sorry she missed her nephew, Nigel’s wedding, but glad that her daughter, Edwina, got here three weeks earlier and had no such problems.

Her son, Rob, did not come over on this occasion.

Evelyn had been back home several times since her departure in the late 60’s and delights in meeting up and spending time with those she left behind.

She’s here for six weeks and plans to make the most of it.

Naturally, she’ll take back plenty of fond memories of renewing friendships and seeing the sights of her former home.

Her family and friends will make sure of that.
