The centre, which is run by Age NI, is open five days a week and can be a lifeline to older people by providing company and care.

Gillian Thompson, day centre manager, said: “Anna House is a very important part of the community in Dunmurry. Some people attend for the social aspect and activities, some for a break from their caring role at home and others may be dealing with a relationship breakdown or bereavement.

“Many older people experience isolation and loneliness so the centre is a welcoming and safe place where they can leave their troubles at the door and enjoy each other’s company over a hot meal.”

She added: “We’re looking for enthusiastic and reliable volunteers to support the everyday running of the centre, which may include helping staff to serve meals, assist with activities and games, encourage older people to participate, provide conversation, and be part of a team that really enjoys making the lives of older people better.

“We’re very busy and would love some extra help from those with a few hours to spare, at least one day a week, between 11am and 3pm.

“We greatly value the positive contribution our volunteers make and this is a great opportunity to help local older people in need.’
