Volunteer takes on 600 mile cycle challenge

A KEEN cyclist has begun an epic 600 mile journey the length of Ireland to raise funds for a Carrick-based charity.

Belfast Lough Sailability volunteer Karl Hunter, from Killinchy in Co Down, started out on the cycle challenge from Cork to Donegal on Monday, August 20.

He will be undertaking the challenge on his own, with support along the way from Carrick man Hugo Crawford.

The journey will take seven days to complete and started at Mizen Head, one of the most southerly points of Ireland at the extremity of a peninsula in Co Cork.

The challenge will finish on August 27 at Malin Head on the Inishowen Peninsula, Co Donegal, the most northerly point of Ireland.

Following a personal near death experience after a skiing accident, Karl joined Belfast Lough Sailability and is now one of the charity’s dedicated volunteers. He is raising funds to buy much needed safety and life-saving equipment for the charity.

Last year, Belfast Lough Sailability enabled over 2,500 people get afloat, including disabled people of all ages and backgrounds from across Northern Ireland.

The charity also acquired a 20-foot open support vessel called The Sea Rover, which allows wheelchair users an opportunity to sail.
