Volunteering with cancer charity helps Larne man land new job

Steven Gilliland’s work helped the charity carry out its vital work supporting local families affected by cancer.

Speaking during Volunteer Week (June 1–7), Steven commented: “I started volunteering with Cancer Fund for Children over a year ago.

“I had the idea of volunteering to do something useful with my time, help others, and to see if it would help with my career prospects.”

Steven says his he is proud to be involved in the Cancer Fund for Children’s work.

“Most of my volunteering has been in the office at HQ,” he explained.

“This gives the fundraisers more time to go out and actually meet the charity’s many supporters, and also to further increase awareness of the charity throughout Northern Ireland.

“I also help out at events such as the Belfast Motorbike Show.”

Steven says the experience he gained through volunteering has been instrumental in securing his new job at Phoenix Natural Gas.

The charity’s fundraiser Naomi Braithwaite said: “I am delighted that volunteering with us has helped Steven get a job.

“He is a very valued member of our wonderful volunteer team. Volunteer Week is a fantastic opportunity to show our gratitude to all of our wonderful Volunteers.”
