Volunteers from Kilrea visit Zomba

Five volunteers from Kilrea have helped put the finishing touches to a new orphan centre in southern Malawi.

Back in April, Leanne Mark, Caroline Patterson, Lynsey Gordon, Rosemary Cooper and Lisa Campbell made the trip to Ana ndi Athu in Zomba, the area that has been working in a partnership with Coleraine Borough Council since March 2003.

The five volunteers worked for two weeks on the final stages of the centre for the orphans.

The building project was funded by the Zomba Action Project.

The volunteers paid their own travel costs with help from sponsors.

Speaking on their return home, the volunteers said: “Our fortnight working at Ana ndi Athu has helped us appreciate what a difference this orphan

“They will receive nursery education in an attractive, (but basic) building; and they will receive a nutritious midday meal, prepared in the new kitchen.

“A new well and pump will provide clean water.

“So facilities for education, clean water and good food; that is how we have helped transform children’s lives at Ana ndi Athu.”
