Volunteers ‘pivotal’ to Bloom initiative

Brighter Whitehead were presented with the Carrickfergus in Bloom ‘Outstanding Contribution Award’ during their annual dinner at the Joymount Arms.

Presenting the award was Alderman May Beattie, chair of the local authority’s Parks and Countryside Sub-committee.

“Brighter Whitehead has made an outstanding contribution to the town of Whitehead and to our borough,” she said. “The council wanted to thank the group for the immense community participation and support of our borough wide ‘in bloom’ initiative.

“Volunteers are pivotal at creating and maintaining our blooming borough on an all year round basis and central to our ability to take part in prestigious competitions such as Britain in Bloom. I would like to commend all who took part in this year’s initiative.”

Bill Pollock, chairman of Brighter Whitehead, said the Britain in Bloom contest was a magnificent opportunity for Whitehead to enhance its surroundings and create beautiful displays that are enjoyed by everybody.

“Our ‘in bloom’ campaign is much more than flowers and making the town look good for one day; instead it is a 365 day initiative that looks at sustainable development and biodiversity, conservation and recycling, local environmental quality, permanent landscaping, and public awareness of the environment,” he added.
