VP Borland retires after four decades at Carrickfergus College

Mr Borland was joined by colleagues at a function in the Windrose to mark his retirement.

Principal Hedley Webb gave an emotional speech at the event documenting Mr Borland’s “amazing contribution” to the life of the school in his four decades of teaching there.

A member of staff at Carrickfergus College since September 1976, Mr Borland filled a number of roles including mathematics teacher, head of year, head of mathematics, vice-principal and a period as acting principal.

He enjoyed the variety of the job, working with staff, young people and their parents, which ensured no two days were the same.

Having played hockey and rugby before becoming a keen hill walker, Mr Borland was closely connected with the school’s Rambling Club. He is also an avid reader and ski enthusiast.

Every member of staff was involved in making a video to mark the occasion of his retirement - singing along to the classic Beatles track ‘With a Little Help from My Friends’.

Teaching colleague Sharon Long summed up: “A great day was had by all and the school wish Mr Borland all the best in his retirement.”
