Walking the Colours in Ballymoney - NOW ON!

“Walking the Colours” aims to support the exploration of parades, processions and marches as a shared local tradition historically and in the present.

The exhibition is part of the heritage based Cultural Fusions project being delivered by Mid-Antrim Museum Service and Causeway Museum Service across the local councils of Ballymena, Larne, Ballymoney, Coleraine, Limavady and Moyle. It is supported by the PEACE III Programme through funding from the Special EU Programmes Body administered by the North East PEACE III Partnership.

Many organisations engage in parades, processions or marches as public displays of their pride in their traditions. These are often colourful affairs with participants wearing splendid regalia and carrying bright flags and banners depicting the symbols and images that are held sacred. The music of marching bands is also integral to the occasion.

The exhibition explores the origins of parades looking at the guilds, trades and orders who hark back to the middle ages while also exploring the current scene. It includes the role of youth organisations, along with civic parades and public celebrations.

The exhibition displays a wide range of visually striking material from local museum collections and local organisations. It will run until 20th March, Monday to Thursday and Saturday 9.00am to 5.00pm and Fridays 9.00am to 4.30pm in Ballymoney Museum at Ballymoney Town Hall. Admission is free.
