Wallace Prep pupils enjoy wind farm visit

PUPILS from Wallace Preparatory School have been learning about the power and exploring the benefits of wind energy through an educational visit to the Gruig wind farm, near Loughguile.

Developed and operated by RES UK & Ireland Ltd, a leading Northern Ireland renewable energy company, the wind farm has played host to a schools’ education programme which is being delivered in conjunction with Action Renewables.

Students from the Lisburn school were each given a tour of the wind farm facility which was tailored to their specific curriculum requirements. Hosted by Laura Coey, Action Renewables, the pupils also took part in a series of educational activities and discussions which focused on the wind farm’s key operational features, the long term benefits of wind energy along with Northern Ireland’s abundant supply of wind.

Commenting on the local schools’ programme Jennifer McCorry, Project Manager, RES said: “We were very encouraged by the interest the pupils showed in the wind farm, their participation in discussions about important environmental issues along with their awareness of how the lifestyle choices we all make impact on our natural resources. The feedback we have received from the teachers was very positive and indicated that the programme successfully stimulated the children and underpinned their curriculum-based course work.

“With a range of activities including science-based tours, discussions and even getting to look inside a wind turbine, we hope the pupils found the experience both enjoyable and educational.”
