Walls of Derry in contest formost popular lotto project

The Walls, which have come under the stewardship of The Honourable The Irish Society, the City of London’s Irish charitable arm, since 1613 join a range of other historic sites to bid to become the ‘National Treasure’, including The Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre; The Lyric Theatre (Belfast); St Patrick’s Visitor Centre (Downpatrick); and Ulster Museum (Belfast).
The City Walls Heritage Project received £446,000 in National Lottery funding, via the Heritage Lottery Fund, to engage people with the heritage of the Walled City. The project helped ensure that the Walls are valued by everyone in the city as a heritage which should be protected and cherished for future generations.

Hide AdThe ‘What’s Your National Treasure’ campaign is asking people to visit Facebook.com/LotteryGoodCauses to choose the best from a range of these iconic venues, landmarks and facilities.
Votes can be cast on Facebook.com/LotteryGoodCauses until midnight on Tuesday 27 May. People taking part in the survey will be able to share their participation and will also have a chance to win one of five iPad Airs.
Alderman Ian Luder, Governor of The Honourable The Irish Society and former Lord Mayor of the City of London, said: “With one week to go to cast votes, my colleagues and I would be delighted to see the Walls of Derry crowned as Northern Ireland’s best National Lottery project.
“It is the only project nominated in the area of Ulster, planted by The Honourable The Irish Society four centuries ago, and an iconic part of our shared history, of which we are rightly proud.”

Hide AdMark Lusby, Heritage Officer for the City Walls said: “It is a tremendous honour that our work has been recognised when so many projects have been funded by The National Lottery. We are urging our supporters to vote for us, because we would love to be crowned the Northern Ireland’s best National Lottery project.”
As well as voting for Northern Ireland’s favourite place, the public are also being asked to vote for the celebrity who is most deserving of the title.
Twelve places and five famous names are in the running in the competition.
A winning face and place for Northern Ireland - along with those from Wales, England and Scotland - will be announced from the full list of 68 later this year.
