Want to find out more about how Project Kelvin will affect Coleraine?

COLERAINE Connected, a seminar outlining the potential of Project Kelvin to local businesses and entrepreneurs will be held in Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart on Wednesday, May 5.

Hosted by Coleraine Borough Council, the event is aimed at providing a greater insight into the range of opportunities that could arise from the new connectivity.

It will provide the local business community with an explanation on what Project Kelvin is and what it could mean for Coleraine.

Mayor of Coleraine, Councillor Sandy Gilkinson said that Project Kelvin has the potential to bring substantial benefits to the area, he said: “The project will bring international connectivity to Coleraine providing us with a world class telecommunications platform comparable to European cities such as Amsterdam, Glasgow and Manchester.

“It is important that we fully appreciate the potential of Project Kelvin which is expected to include greater competition in the telecommunications market and improved speed and reliability of international telecommunications.”

Moira Mann, Council’s Head of Development Services, added; “The purpose of this seminar is to provide information and answer some questions about the enhanced connectivity that has been brought to the Borough through Project Kelvin and to generate a greater understanding of its potential application.

“It will examine and address the following; What could it mean for Coleraine and the north coast?, From a business perspective who is it relevant to?, If a company has a use for this superfast and large capacity connectivity how do they go about accessing it?, Are there local entrepreneurs who could create new businesses using the technology?, Is there scope to use it for inward investment?

“It is important to generate discussion about the potential of the connectivity especially with the private sector who have a vital role in future development.”

Businesses representatives and entrepreneurs will get the opportunity to hear first hand from experts in the field of telecommunications and businesses already involved with Project Kelvin. The speakers will focus on a variety of topics, including; an overview of international connectivity, what the cable provides for Coleraine, the current infrastructural developments at the cable landing station and what it means for local businesses.
