War against weedsand overgrown verges across NW

Roads Minister Chris Hazzard has confirmed that there’s enough money to tackle unsightly weeds in the city centre and that departmental workers have already commenced a blitz against them this summer.

“I can confirm that sufficient funding for weed control is in place this year within the Derry City and Strabane District Council area,” the Minister said, when quizzed by his party colleague Michaela Boyle.

“Work instructions have been issued and spraying commenced in the Derry City centre on June 4, 2016 and in Strabane town centre on June 18, 2016. “Weed spraying will be rolled out to all other areas over the next four weeks weather permitting.

“You will be aware that additional funding has been allocated to my Department following June monitoring and this will allow an improved service across a range of routine maintenance operations,” said the Minister.

Mr Hazzard said grass verges in the Londonderry and Strabane area will also be cut at least twice this year.

“In relation to grass cutting we will now be able to cut grass twice across all areas as required during 2016/17. Additional cutting at sight lines may be carried out as required.”
