War veterans attend Dromore High events

Dromore High School held its annual Remembrance event for the Junior School pupils last Tuesday.

The staff and pupils were joined by members of the local Royal British Legion, Mr Sam Newell Local Poppy Appeal Secretary and Mr Colin Cunningham, Treasurer.

Also joining everyone in school was 98-year-old Mr Bob Lingwood, a World War II veteran from Omagh. He inspired the pupils with his life story and details of his experiences during the second world war.

Mr Lingwood joined the Territorial Army in London in 1937 at the age of 19, at the outbreak of WW2 he was called up and posted to the Royal Signals. He was part of the Expeditionary Force to France in 1939. After Dunkirk he was stationed for two years in Northern Ireland before going on to serve for three years in the Middle East with the 8th Army.

The staff and pupils thanked the Royal British Legion for their attendance at the remembrance event and to Mr Lingwood for his memorable and inspirational contribution to the event.

The Senior Pupils then joined with millions of people across the world on Friday in their annual Remembrance Assembly by observing a silence at 11.00am.

The pupils were joined by representatives of the Dromore branch of the Royal British Legion and Colour Sergeant Alan Baxter from the Royal Irish regiment. Sergeant Baxter addressed the senior pupils and spoke movingly of his experiences whilst serving with his regiment.

School Chaplain Peter Thompson led the school in a prayer of remembrance and Headmaster Mr McConaghy thanked all those who took part for their contribution.
